By Maureen McNair Have you been looking for a way to volunteer for the South Bay Food Pantry without working inside the pantry or at the food distribution itself? We are looking for a few drivers to join our team of food delivery volunteers. We have a few church families to whom we deliver food every Saturday. We are looking to expand our team of drivers who would pick up boxed or bagged food at the pantry them deliver it to homes. Volunteers only work the Saturdays for which it is convenient for them. Pick up and delivery time is a bit flexible. One driver, Bella Furth, describes volunteering as a delivery driver as feeling "like I am expanding that circle of love and care across the whole county. If I drew it as a cartoon there would be little hearts coming out of my tailpipe.”
We always have dry goods to deliver. But we often have fresh produce and sometimes meat and dairy products. So we ask drivers to obtain their San Diego County Food Handler’s permit so they can transport perishable goods. The permit is obtained through an on-line class which you can start and stop at your leisure. Once you are finished, the pantry will reimburse you for the cost of the course if you like. We also ask drivers to sign a confidentiality agreement with the church. That way, our families know their privacy will be protected. If you are interested in joining our team of delivery drivers, please contact Maureen McNair.
