In a typical year, almost 100 church members and friends host 100 to 150 events that are “won” through auction and attended by ~ 300 of us. Most everyone in our congregation chooses to host and or attend at least one event. Many host/attend multiple events. By and large, these events are “in-person” gatherings which are not feasible this year. The church budget passed in June reflected this reality as we lowered our fundraising target to $35,000, well below what is spent hosting and attending the many events. This year, to reach our goal, we are asking you to consider what you would have otherwise spent hosting/attending and make a comparable, tax-deductible, contribution. And we have several ways to say “thank you!” First, everyone who contributes, no matter the amount, will receive a specially designed mask with our chalice logo. You will also be able to select an additional gift of your choice. And, depending on the amount you contribute, you can attend up to 10 virtual Dining for Dollar$ 2020 events, offered by some well-known D4$ hosts. Our virtual events will take place from November 2020 through April 2021. Our Dining for Dollar$ 2020 Edition will run from now through November 15. What is Dining for Dollar$ 2020 Edition?
If you are new to First Church you may be unfamiliar with Dining for Dollar$. Begun in 2005, Dining for Dollar$ quickly became our most popular collection of fundraising events given by many different hosts throughout the year. Our hosts – church members and friends just like you - offer fun, social events such as dinners, tours, adventures, and workshops. We bid on the offerings in an online auction throughout the month of May. Dining for Dollar$ is built on the concept of members creating and hosting fellow church members and their families & friends for dinners, teas and picnics, museum tours with lunch, pool parties, brunches & barbecues, cooking classes, and other events. We raise as much as $60,000 towards the church's operating budget. This past May we had to forego our yearly auction as it became clear that in-person events were not feasible. We hoped the situation would enable an auction to be held sometime in 2020 and we budgeted raising $30,000. Instead, we are improvising with a Dining for Dollar$ 2020 Edition that will enable us to reach that goal while still providing opportunities for everyone to participate.
