As Letter from Erwin at our Partner Church in Malingin, Philippines

As part of our Partner Church program, we exchange letters between youth in San Diego and Malingin. Here's a letter from one student.
"Hi I’m Erwin Castañeda, 13 years old. I go to school Monday to Friday. I wake up at 5am or 6am. Then I go to school at 6:30am and the school is about 4 km from our house. A few weeks ago, there was a typhoon named “Juan” (John in English). The rain is very heavy but it eventually stopped. In our school campus, there are some thieves and liers. They are bad. I would like to tell you that we will celebrate our 29th Anniversary. I also dream to go to San Diego. There is no snow in the Philippines, it only rains. Philippines has two seasons, sunny and rainy. I am First year high school and the name of my school is Ramon Torres Malingin National High School. What is the name of your school? Is it big? This is the end of my long letter. We love you in San Diego. From, Erwin" (10/24/10).

How do we create an environment where everyone who walks through our doors feels included, engaged and valued?

We begin by addressing our assumptions and unpacking our biases.
We strengthen our foundation of core values by understanding why the work of racial justice and healing is important for all of us to engage in.
We broaden our focus to include all of the ways people are oppressed or marginalized.
We ask: What does being inclusive and diverse really mean?
We recognize that we all participate in a variety of cultures (family, community, male, female, LGBTQQ, church, age group, etc.). These cultures are created and perpetuated by the people who participate in and interact with them.
In order to interact in positive ways with cultures that are not part of our own personal identity, we learn strategies for interpersonal interaction.
We are willing to take risks, and accept the reality that we will make mistakes on this journey and learn from them.
In this way, we become more confident as intercultural beings.
