Treat yourself to an evening of uplifting songs from the African American choral tradition, including traditional and contemporary gospel, Negro spirituals, anthems, and oratorios. Under the direction of Ken Anderson, the MLK Choir raises funds for educational grants for local college-bound students. The Choir will be joined by Marshall Voit, music director at First UU San Diego, opening the concert with protest music classics, original compositions, and social justice songs. Registration required. Get your free tickets.

​​Melanie DeMore is a 3 time Grammy-nominated singer/composer, choral conductor, music director and vocal activist. She facilitates vocal and stick pounding workshops for professional choirs and community groups as well as directing numerous choral organizations. We are thrilled to welcome Melanie DeMore for a whole week of music and YOU are heartily invited to her Song as Worship Workshop, Community Sing Concert AND our Music of the Heart Sunday service - all FREE. Read on for the weeklong schedule.

Performing pieces from their hit show "Motown and More", Darryl F. Walker and The Saxations righteously rocked an audience of about 300 in the Meeting House. It was a great family-friendly evening the packed audience dancing in their seats and singing along. As the fourth performance in our free Community Events series, the Saxations brought in many church members, neighbors, friends and people who had never heard of First UU. We're excited by the growing awareness of our church in the community and hope to continue this success with our next event; the Grossmont College Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble. The Outreach and Growth Fund's Front Street Productions is excited to present this concert featuring La Jolla Music Society's Fellowship Artists. Works by Ravel, Janacek, Taneyev and Schoenberg will be performed by the Aestas Trio (piano trio) and the Pelia Quartet (string quartet), without intermission. This concert is free and not to be missed! You must register to attend this open-seating concert through Eventbrite. Questions? Roughly 190 attendees enjoyed a musical afternoon on the patio of the First Church Hillcrest campus listening, singing along, clapping and tapping to the rhythms - enjoying being together and having a good time. Entertainers included the Front Street Troubadours, Carolyn and Tom Owen-Towle, Drew Massicot, the South Bay Singers, the Ferrier Brothers, Penny Whistlers, Keith Mesecher and more performing  a sparkling variety of folk music. The UU Men’s Fellowship provided free snacks, drinks, ice cream bars and popsicles for everyone.  ​
