When John Keasler came to First Church in 1999, he was looking for a spiritual home where his being gay wouldn't be a problem. When he found the Rainbow Action Group on the patio and he learned that the Men's Fellowship sponsored a Gay-Straight weekend retreat, he knew he'd come home. For 22 years, John has been a loyal member and a committed leader, currently co-chair of Rainbow Outreach. I asked him why he thinks that a group officially recognized as an organization of the church in 1981 is still going strong. He said Rainbow Outreach has been doing the same thing for forty years, and that it responds to issues that affect LGBTQ people within First UU and in the larger community.

"Regarding Mr. Hall’s article 'Chick-fil-A stance feeds crowd’s zeal'. Just as Mr. Hall prefers his lunch “Hold the politics.” So I too, a tax-paying, law-abiding citizen would like the right to marry the person I love – hold the politics." - Kathleen Owens
This was a letter to the editor I submitted to the UT on Thursday evening, after reading Matthew Hall’s article on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012. I was dismayed at the editorial decision to publish a full-color picture on the front page of section A, above the fold about a story that starts on page 1 of section B. I can’t believe there isn’t more important news for the front page of our only paper. Looking at the picture and the people standing in line to show their appreciation for this restaurant chain whose profits benefit discrimination and hate, I wondered how many of those who were in line are heterosexual and enjoy the right to marry anyone they love – without question or scrutiny; how many of them have experienced divorce, spousal abuse or violence? A Loving Testimony to Carolyn & Tom Owen-Towle On Behalf of the Queer Community by Jan Garbosky 6/28/02 For the past 24 years—since their first autumn at First Church—Tom and Carolyn have provided a place in which “affirming the inherent dignity and worth of all persons” is a beloved norm. Together and in their individual ministries, they have found ways to help this community explore “otherness” and support “oneness.” Because of their pioneering and support, this church has welcomed first gay; then lesbian and gay; then lesbian, gay and bisexual; and now lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals and organizations. It is because of Carolyn and Tom’s vision and leadership that these church grounds have become a safe place where all of us can share our gifts.
