Take Action for Indigenous Peoples' Day!

10/11/2020

SURJ is excited to participate in Indigenous Peoples’ Day, on Monday, October 12th as part of our commitment to fighting settler colonialism and respecting Indigenous sovereignty. Dismantling settler colonialism is a key part of undermining white supremacy, racial capitalism, and the continued theft of Native land and genocide of Native people. Let’s rise together for Indigenous sovereignty, for Black lives & liberation and to get Trump out of office in November. Join us in taking powerful action on Indigenous Peoples’ Day when the NDN Collective launches LANDBACK--a campaign to return Native land to its rightful stewards.
On July 3rd, 2020, amidst uprisings to end police brutality and for Black Liberation, Indigenous land defenders reignited the fight for the Black Hills and to close Mt. Rushmore, a symbol of racism and white supremacy. Twenty one of those land defenders are still facing charges from protesting Trump’s visit to Mt. Rushmore. Meanwhile the defense of the ancestral homelands of the Lakota--Ȟesápa--has spurred an international movement for LANDBACK.

Please watch and share this powerful 5 minute short film on #LANDBACK that puts the fight for the return of the Black Hills into context, uplifts the disproportionate rates of imprisonment of Indigenous people and the connections between #LANDBACK and the Movement for Black Lives.

Join us in taking action to support #LANDBACK in this historic era of racist monuments and structures being pulled down.

Actions:
  1. Sign this petition demanding Mt. Rushmore and all Public Lands in the Black Hills be returned to the Oceti Sakowin
  2. Sign up for #LANDBACK campaign updates, including a webinar on Saturday October 10th at 3pm EST in partnership with Movement 4 Black Lives. Look for local opportunities to mobilize your folks for Indigenous Peoples’ Day actions, or organize to get your local institutions to change the holiday to Indigenous Peoples Day.
  3. Amplify on social media by following @ndncollective on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter and using the hashtags: #LANDBACK #DefendDevelopDecolonize #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020
  4. Donate to NDN collective’s LandBack campaign.
  5. Support organizing to ensure Native communities get out the vote and build power for the elections and beyond. Donate to the Native Voter Fund.

The work to dismantle colonization on this continent is work we must do every day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an important time to center Indigenous sovereignty and the fight for #LANDBACK! Let’s keep dismantling. Let’s keep building the power we need to dismantle white supremacy, get Native lands back to Native hands, and defend Black Lives!
