Your 24/25 Board Candidates

Karen Lamphere, Vice President/President elect; two-year term
I have been a member of First Church for nearly 25 years. I became involved when my daughter was enrolled in the preschool and I had an opportunity to learn about the church. I was drawn to the congregational commitment to social justice and began attending church regularly in about 2000.
My involvement with First Church incudes being an RE teacher, an usher, and an OWL facilitator. I served on the Generosity Ministry Team and the Social Justice Executive Team, and I co-lead the Reproductive Justice Action Group. I currently serve as Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
The future holds great opportunities for positive change and growth for our church and I’m excited to continue to be a part of it as Vice President of the Board of Trustees.

Armin Kuhlman, Treasurer; one-year term
I have been a Unitarian Universalist for about 50 years and a member of our church since 1989. I was previously on the Budget committee and also Church Treasurer for 3 years. Current activities include the Finance committee, Climate Justice Team, Men’s Fellowship, South Bay Food Pantry volunteer and serving as an usher. Related professional experience includes accounting, financial and human resource management as well as a CPA. I have also served as a board member of the Institute of Management Accountants, President of the Friends of College Rolando Library, as Treasurer and board member with the San Diego Foundation for Change and currently the Villa Bayview HOA. I am looking forward to contributing to our sustainable future and renewing our church community. |
Les Vivian, Trustee at Large; two-year term
I was born on February 29th, 1944. (Yes, I had my 20th Leap Birthday this year!) I’m the father of a 43 year-old-daughter and grandfather of two very young grandchildren. My wife, Mary Byrne Hoffmann, passed away on July 30, 2019. After Tr**mp got elected, Carol Elliott suggested that Mary Byrne, checkout her church and this led me to the Hillcrest Campus. Mike Dorfi got me to attend a UUMF 4th Monday meeting and then the Spring 2017 UUMF Men’s Renewal at Camp de Benneville Pines. This led Mary Byrne to join me for Adult Camp, which I highly recommend, that summer. After volunteering as a Men’s Conversation Group facilitator at Father Joe’s Village and as an online Crisis Counselor, I joined the Lay Ministers. Also, my involvement with FUU has included being an active member of the Men’s Fellowship; being a member of the Listening Circles Planning Team created by Rev. Brown and Rev. Omega; taking a Restorative Circle Facilitators Training Course; participating in the UUA Pilot Right Relations Training; facilitating the Caregivers/Allies Support Group and recently joining the membership team. Also, Theresa Cooley’s seminal book: “Transforming Conflict: The Blessings of Congregational Turmoil” has been inspirational to me and I’m very grateful for the workshops on that book that have been led by Rev. Justine and Rev. Kristen. Although I love to tell stories and jokes, I hope that my greatest strength is not to talk but to listen well and be present for other people. I’m looking forward to helping forge our future. |
Jim Davis, Trustee at Large; three-year term
Jim Davis was born on a family farm in rural Arkansas. He graduated at the University of Arkansas with a BA in Social Work, then completed his MA in Sociology at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. He has worked in juvenile institutions in Little Rock and St Louis, managed a team of research analysts in Missouri state government, was a co-owner of a music store, and a real estate broker. A UU since 1992, Jim was a lay leader in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Jefferson City MO. He served as president of the St Louis Area UU Council and on the Board of Directors of the Central Midwest District of the UUA. He moved to San Diego in 2021. |

Gay Hybertsen, three-year term
Gay was born and raised in a small town in California's gold country. I still work part time as a psychotherapist. I am married and have a daughter and two grown grandchildren. I have been a member for First Church for 40 years, and have taught RE, served on the Ombudsman Committee, provided professional backup for our Lay Ministers, worked in various capacities in Looking Glass Theatre, and most recently served on the Board of Trustees. I know how important it is to have a strong board, so look forward to being on the Nominating Committee. |
