Two choirs ringing out traditional compositions and innovative new works
Our handbell ensembles share their art in Sunday services, church programs and community events using 4 octaves of Malmark handbells and 3 octaves of Malmark choirchimes. Rehearsals take place weekly in the Meeting House from September through June, with opportunities for small ensemble and solo work throughout the year. Both groups strive for continuing growth in technique, ergonomics, theory and musicality. First UU is a member of the Handbell Musicians of America.

Las Campanas Handbell Choir
Rehearses Mondays 6-7:30 pm in the Meeting House on the Hillcrest campus.
Spanish for "The Bells,” First UU’s founding handbell ensemble Las Campanas was formed in 2005 by then Music Director Ken Herman. Las Campanas focuses on musicianship and the high-quality performance of original handbell literature. Growing together as musicians and contributing their collective voice to the Church’s music program are important to the members of this ensemble.

UUBellation Handbell Choir
Rehearses Wednesdays 5-6 pm in the Meeting House on the Hillcrest campus.
Since 2007, UUBellation has been exploring and expanding the use of handbells in service with original handbell works, "non-traditional" repertoire, alternate use of space and collaboration with other musicians – be they on staff, other church ensembles, congregation members or those from the larger community. One could say that UUBellation is not your grandma’s handbell choir.

Participation in either handbell ensemble is open to all members and friends of the congregation who are interested and are able to commit to rehearsals and performances. The ability to read music is helpful, but not mandatory. Coaching is available to those new to handbells and/or reading music, and assignments are tailored to each individual's skill and ability.
