Twilight Vigil: Repeal the One Big Bloated Bill

We are excited to share news about a powerful new interfaith movement taking a stand for justice, compassion, and human dignity.

An interfaith coalition has formed to reverse the harmful effects of the Trump administration’s "One Big Bloated Bill" (HR 1). This movement, known as Covenant for Our Future, brings together diverse faith traditions to advocate for our communities, our planet, and vulnerable populations across the nation.

Among the leading coalition partners driving this national effort is Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ).

What’s at Stake?
The legislation passed by Congress has led to devastating impacts across our communities, including:

• Severe cuts to vital support programs like food stamps (SNAP) and medical care
• Rollbacks on crucial environmental protections
• Erosion of migrant rights and human dignity
• Massive funding increases for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Local Event: San Diego Twilight Vigil on Wednesday, August 26
Here in San Diego, we are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our interfaith partners. San Diego’s Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice (ICEJ) is co-sponsoring a local Twilight Vigil, and First UU is proud to support this event.

• Time: 6:00 PM
• Location: In front of the Federal Courthouse (Downtown San Diego: 880 Front Street and 221 W Broadway)

The vigil will feature various faith leaders speaking out against the harms done by HR 1 and calling for a future rooted in justice, equity, and care for one another.

National Week of Action: August 23 – 30
To raise our voices and demand change, August 23 through August 30 has been designated as a National Week of Action. Across the country, communities will be holding teach-ins, town halls, vigils, and protest marches. The goal is clear: to build momentum and ensure that if the composition of Congress shifts this November, elected leaders will move swiftly to reverse these harmful policies.
