Pedal, Repair, Progress: First UU is San Diego's Newest Bike Fix-it Station

A new community resource is coming to Hillcrest and First UU! We are thrilled to invite neighbors, cyclists, and community members to the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for our brand-new Bike Fix-it Station located in the parking lot of the First Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church of San Diego.

Positioned right at the top of Bachman Place—one of the primary, heavily traveled routes connecting Mission Valley to Hillcrest—this public repair station will provide essential tools and an air pump to keep local cyclists moving safely.

This project grew directly out of an initiative from our congregant Steve Gelb and BikeSD, who recognized the urgent need for a public repair hub along this steep, heavily used commuting corridor. By installing this station, we aim to make cycling more accessible, reliable, and convenient for both church members and the broader San Diego community.

For Unitarian Universalists, supporting sustainable transportation is more than just a convenience; it is a spiritual commitment. Our UU values call us directly to honor and protect the Interdependent Web of All Existence. Reducing carbon emissions by supporting zero-emission transportation is one tangible way we put our faith and climate justice values into action.

• 11:15 AM — Group Ride Arrival: Join BikeSD for a community ride ending at First UU Church just before the ceremony begins.
• 11:30 AM — Ribbon-Cutting & Press Conference: Official unveiling of the Fix-it Station, followed by remarks from:
  • Leaders from BikeSD
  • Leadership from First UU Church of San Diego
  • San Diego City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn
