Some highlights of the 2010 General Assembly

Some highlights of the 2010 General Assembly Mar Cárdenas - This was my second General Assembly. I attended at the invitation of members of several members of UU churches in Arizona who wanted my support in helping pass ‘Immigration as a Moral Issue’ as our next Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) for the period 2010-2014.

Other actions by the Assembly were:

1. The adoption of a Statement of Conscience (SOC) "Creating Peace" on which John Schaibly from the Hillcrest campus has been working so hard.

2. Decided not to boycott Phoenix in 2012 but to make it a “Justice" General Assembly: to focus programming on immigration and justice issues, and to cooperate with Arizona UU congregations and local Latino organizations to help however we canin planning this unprecedented gathering. The big news is that this was all done in a most inclusionary manner, minimizing disappointments and hurt feelings!

3. Delegates adopted Action of Immediate Witness (AIW), “Oppose Anti-Immigrant Measures at the State Level (Arizona Law SB 1070 and the Like) and Hasten Federal Immigration Reform,”

4. Overwhelmingly supported the marriage proposal of our Phoenix friend, Jim Graham to Carolina Krawarik. Both of them hosted UUs and non-UUs in their homes during the May 29th National Action day. A video of the proposal can be found on YouTube.
