Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Hillcrest last Saturday to watch the annual Pride Parade, one of the most popular summertime events in San Diego. Here's a report from Gwen Baldwin of Summit UU Fellowship in Santee.
The Old Town Trolley (arranged by First UU Church in Hillcrest) was pretty full. Summit had 12 parasol folks, 1 or 2 marchers, and 4 folks on the trolley. There were also participants from First Church and its South Bay campus. I got to our area, practiced our (parasol) routine and then watched the parade until it was time to hop in with the group. I think the heat wave kept folks away. I had four cancellations because of it. Too bad since we ended up with a break in the weather. I will tell you that it was the fastest moving Pride Parades I have ever been in. Once we started, we just kept moving and the cool breeze was wonderful. The crowd was enthusiastic so the Parasol Team felt appreciated. I am sure the marchers felt so, too.
