Meditation is a UU cornerstone

Meditation groups and Buddhist Sanghas meet regularly at the Hillcrest campus. Visitors are always welcome. No prior experience or Buddhist commitment is necessary for any of the following gatherings. Meditation has become the cornerstone of the faith of many Unitarian-Universalists, whether their belief is agnostic, theist, or atheist, and whether their orientation is Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Islamic, or other. Many have found that their own personal meditation experience has been enhanced by the presence and support of others in group mediation.

South Bay Campus

We offer silent meditation open to everyone for free on Sunday mornings before service from 9am-9:20am in Suite 101. Get details and directions to our South Bay Campus.

Hillcrest Campus

Sunday Morning Meditation
Sundays 9 to 9:20 am in Room 323

A twenty minute sitting meditation is held each week prior to the first Sunday Service. Please see signs on campus for location.

Open Heart Sangha
Sundays: 4 to 6 pm in Room 323

Practicing in the tradition of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, a Sangha is a group of individuals gathering together to learn more of the teachings of the Buddha and support each other in their collective spiritual and life journeys. The group practices sitting meditation and walking meditation, has a short lesson, shares about the practice, and sings. Please bring a cushion or mat to sit on, or chairs will be available. Open to everyone; drop in, registration not required. For more information contact Marge Wurgel at (619) 263-2165.

Mid-Week Meditation
Wednesdays 10 am to 12 pm in Room 323

The Wednesday meeting begins with a 40 minute meditation at 10 am. This meditation can be silent sitting meditation while others do a walking meditation on our church patio. People arrive based on how long they wish to meditate. The meditation is followed by a brief ritual and discussion of our meditation and/or practice. The remainder of the time centers around a book discussion.

Some come for all or part of these meetings. You are welcome to drop in.

In addition to the Sanghas hosted by church members, Insight San Diego offers Sanghas, classes, and visiting Buddhist oriented speakers. Visit them online at insightsd.org.
