Freedom to Marry

Working for Marriage Equality

Activities

Established to work for marriage equality in general and, more specifically, to defeat Proposition 8 in 2008, the Freedom to Marry Affiliate's activities during the 2009-10 church year have been minimal. Church member Eric Isaacson drafted an Amicus Briefs representing the interfaith community (including the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry [UULM]) in the Prop 8 trial. Eric and Jan Garbosky continue to serve on the UULM's Marriage Equality Steering Group. The affiliate hosted a Marriage Equality mini-conference in conjunction with the San Diego Cluster's Social Justice Conference. Our work supports the following First Church Outcome Statements:

  • We identify and challenge oppression within and beyond our church community so that all people may have their worth and dignity affirmed.
  • We address the needs and issues necessary to produce a more just, equitable, and compassionate society for each other, all beings, and the planet.
  • We are generous with our resources, time, and talents both to our church and to others in need.
