Denominational Relations

Interfacing with our larger UU family

The denominational Relations team supports activities that connect First Church to our larger UU family. It also serves as a link with the cluster, district and continental UU organizations.

Want to be a 2017 Delegate to the General Assembly and/or District Assembly?

Would you like to represent First UU in Arizona and/or New Orleans? The buzz is beginning for our faith movement's annual gatherings! If you have been a member for at least a year, you are eligible and encouraged to be a delegate to either or both the District Assembly and the General Assembly.

District Assembly (DA) will be different this year (March 31 - April 1, 2017)

This District Assembly will focus on migrant and borderland justice in Southern Arizona. It will be held in the Sonoran Desert as thirty partner organizations offer interactive immersion experiences designed to connect you to the social, environmental and spiritual facets of immigration justice. Then, over 300 Unitarian Universalists will meet to worship at the border wall as the Transformative capstone of our gathering.

The Baja Four, as a Four-congregation cluster, are hosting District Assembly in THREE different base cities, Tucson, Amado & Sierra Vista. Separated by up to 90 miles of open desert, each church building will be a host for the weekend. Each base location will have a different agenda of activities for Saturday, April 1. The Friday evening keynote address and the late Saturday afternoon business meetings for the district, and for Camp de Benneville Pines, will be presented by video conference at all three locations.

The differing immersion activities will help you decide which site you should register for. These can be viewed on the District Assembly website http://justiceda2017.weebly.com/ where you can also register. The registration fee is $100 during the Early Bird interval above, or $125 after February 15. You will need to register for housing separately – your housing location will depend on which immersion activity you choose.

We encourage you to register as a delegate from First Church to vote on items in the business meetings. Delegates will be able to be reimbursed $100. You must apply to become a delegate; the application form can be downloaded to your right, under "Files and Links", and in box 13 in the Volunteer Room.

General Assembly (GA) in New Orleans, LA (June 21 - 25, 2017)

General Assembly 2017 will be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA. Steeped in a history of influences from Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa, New Orleans is one of America’s most culturally and historically-rich destinations. It is a city known for its music, food, architecture, and festivals.

New Orleans is also known as a place of re-birth following the devastation of Katrina in 2005. Many Unitarian Universalists have contributed time and funds in the effort to rebuild both the city and the congregations in the area. By going to New Orleans, we can both celebrate our successes and recommit to the relationships that have been forged with this community.

You are encouraged to attend this inspiring conference of thousands of UUs from around the world. As usual, there will be many workshops and social events, in addition to the business meetings where we will elect a new President for the association. For more details about the special features of the conference, visit their website, http://www.uua.org/ga.

If you would like to be a delegate to GA, you must apply to First Church using the same application form here and in box 13 in the Volunteer Room. The same application form is used for both DA and GA.
