Chris Christenson

Adult Education, Communications, and Database Coordinator

Born and raised in a small village (pop 3,000) in rural, northern New Hampshire. Think cold. Think snow. I Attended Plymouth State College (now Plymouth University); active in theater and music, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, certified to teach Social Science.

After graduation, entered the Peace Corps and was assigned to Truk (now Chuuk), a small island in the western Pacific. Besides sailing, worked with the Micronesian Seminar to develop and implement a series of secondary social science curricula on Micronesian geography, history, culture and politics.

While in Truk, met and married (on the beach at sunset), Patricia, also a Peace Corps, then-contract, teacher.

After the Peace Corps, entered the world of corporate education. First, working 20 years with an international training company on projects the Asia and the Middle East, developing and implementing training for radar systems, off-shore super-tanker loading, oil industry operations, heavy equipment and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft maintenance. (One of these assignments took us to Indonesia for five years where we adopted a son, Alexander.) Then working 20 years locally, managing the technical publications and training department of a financial-system's software development company.

Attended San Diego State University; received a Master's degree in Instructional Design from the Educational Technology department.

Lives in Poway with Patricia, a retired English-as-a-Second Language teacher; spend time together gardening, cooking, reading, watching movies. There are also concerts, operas, and exploring San Diego's wineries and breweries; also yoga, wood carving, and sketching. Patricia has taught 2s & 3s in our Children's Education Program since 1992. Patricia spends portions of each year in Bali volunteering at the Youth Center associated with Yayasan Bumi Sehat, whose director, Ibu Robin Lim, received the CNN's 2012 Hero of the Year award.

Son, Alexander, went through our Children's RE program. He graduated from Whittier College, studying Political Science and Economics; and has a Master's from Azusa Pacific in Leadership. He is married and lives in Rancho Peñasquitos. He works as a Systems Analyst in Risk Management and Continuity Planning for a local financial-system's software development company. He is an NCO in the California National Guard.

After "retiring" from the corporate world, and as a fourth-generation Unitarian, have had the pleasure and joy of working at First Church since 2008. It is so rewarding to be part of such a supportive and caring environment. People-helping-people. A place where people really care. My hope is that, in some small way, I can contribute to the growth and transformation of the community and it's individuals.
