Joined the staff in 2015.
My name is Brenda Garcia and I am the Social Justice and South Bay Ministry Teams Coordinator for First Unitarian Universalist San Diego. I grew up in a small community in the central valley of California and moved to San Diego after I graduated from the University of California Merced with a degree in Sociology.
My scholarly interest in social relationships and communal diversification, with the underlying purpose of understanding how social interactions shape cultural and social structure, led me to intern and work for an interfaith nonprofit. This nonprofit focused on bridging and empowering marginalized communities throughout Stanislaus County. It helped create policy changes that provided aid and resources for their congregations and communities to further assist in areas of social inequalities like education, health care, and immigration. I also worked a few years in customer service. I have been given the honor and joy to transition my skills to First Church in 2015. Working with nonprofits, specifically congregations like First Unitarian Universalist Church, is spiritually and emotionally rewarding. I hope that I can contribute in the growth and change in this community.
With my spare time I like watching documentaries, hiking, exploring Balboa Park, being outside and enjoying the company of friends and family. I love attending concerts, museums and appreciating art in its various forms.
