An Evening with Emily Dickinson
Saturday, June 3, at 7 pm in the First UU Church of San Diego Meeting House. An internet search has failed to unearth when British director Terence Davies’ acclaimed new film biography of Emily Dickinson, “A Quiet Passion,” will play San Diego, but it is no secret that soprano Lynn Mendoza-Khan will present “An Evening with Emily Dickinson”.
Much of what we know about this great poet and intellect comes from her poetry, so it is not surprising that a number of composers have been drawn to her poems for insight and self-revelation. Lynn’s recital program will include Dickinson song cycles by Ernst Bacon, Jake Heggie, André Previn, and Ricky Ian Gordon. She will also sing Alberto Ginastera’s highly charged song collection “Cinco canciones populares argentinas” as well as several favorite opera arias.
Director of Music Laureate Ken Herman will accompany Lynn in this recital, which will be given as a benefit for our Partner Church congregation in Brassó, Romania. A donation of $15 will be accepted at the door.
